Meet Egypt’s new foreign, defense, finance ministers after cabinet shuffle

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi swore in a new government on Wednesday following a major cabinet reshuffle that saw mergers and changes in at least 20 ministries, including in economic portfolios, one month after the former government submitted its resignation.

Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly retained his position, which he has held since June 2018, in the new lineup. Madbouly had submitted his government’s resignation June 3, after which Sisi reappointed him to form a new government tasked with economic reforms, attracting local and foreign investments, boosting the private sector and reducing inflation.

The new government, now made up of 30 ministries, is set to present its program to parliament next Monday, according to local reports.

The move comes as the country grapples with an economic crisis that has led to soaring inflation rates, a weakening currency and growing debts. Egypt is also dealing with the repercussions of the war that continues to rage in neighboring Gaza after nearly nine months.
