Morocco to host 2030 World Cup as Saudi Arabia bids for 2034
The announcement follows historic performances by Morocco’s men's and women's squads at their most recent respective World Cups. Saudi Arabia had also sought to host the 2030 tournament following Qatar winning the rights to host in 2022.
Morocco will be among several countries to host the 2030 men’s World Cup, soccer’s governing body FIFA announced on Wednesday, while Saudi Arabia announced its intention to host the following tournament.
Morocco, Spain and Portugal will jointly host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay in South America will also each get to host one match in honor of the first ever FIFA World Cup in Uruguay in 1930, the body said in a statement.
Morocco and the two European countries will automatically qualify for the cup as a result.
The Saudi Arabian Football Federation announced on Wednesday its intention to bid for the 2034 World Cup. The bid will “draw inspiration from Saudi Arabia’s ongoing social and economic transformation and the country's deep-rooted passion for football,” the official Saudi Press Agency reported.
