Tunisia’s phosphate industry still not ready to help country navigate economic crisis

Contrary to government plans and sector projections, Tunisia’s phosphate output declined by 15.8% over January-September 2023. This is a blow to government hopes that Tunisia’s once flourishing phosphate sector can be revived and support a much-needed economic recovery. The fall in production comes after progressive increases allowed the sector to restart exports. Upcoming investments in infrastructure will help. But turning the phosphates industry around will require a complete sector revamp that secures consistent output and mitigates labor disputes.
