Turkey’s Erdogan, UAE president discuss Gaza during G7
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also briefly chatted with US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the summit.
ANKARA — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, president of the United Arab Emirates, discussed the war in Gaza during a meeting Friday on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy, according to Turkish authorities.
Erdogan told his Emirati counterpart that the Muslim world needs to “stand in unity against the genocidal policies of Israel,” a Turkish readout of the meeting said.
Efforts to achieve an immediate and permanent cease-fire in Gaza and to ensure the delivery of aid to the Palestinian enclave “should be considered a top agenda item,” Erdogan added, per the readout. The Emiratis had not released a readout as of writing.
In addition to hosting the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United States and the United Kingdom at the G7 summit in the city of Apulia, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also invited 10 non-member heads of state, among them the leaders of India, Turkey and the UAE.
